The Boundary County Solid Waste Department is tasked by the Board of County Commissioners with keeping the county clean by collecting and disposing of refuse throughout the county.  The Boundary County Landfill is located north of Bonners Ferry on County Road 29, and is open from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. daily except for nationally recognized holidays.  In addition, there are public collection sites throughout Boundary County for the disposal of household waste, making it easy for local residents and travelers to dispose of litter.  With few exceptions, which are noted below, there is no fee for disposal of solid waste.

A cleaner Boundary County is good for everyone, and by knowing the laws and ordinances regulating refuse collection, everyone can do their part to ensure that Boundary County stays clean and green!

The Boundary County Landfill operates under the provisions of a small community exemption of Federal Subtitle D regulations, which limits the amount of solid waste which can be disposed of in the landfill on an annual basis.  Boundary County strongly supports recycling, and bins for recycling newspapers, magazines, aluminum cans and cardboard are available at the landfill and their use is encouraged.  The more these and other materials are recycled, the longer the Boundary County Landfill can remain open, and the longer it remains open, the lighter the burden on the taxpayer for solid waste disposal.

To make it easier for people in the more remote areas of the county to dispose of household waste, there are numerous refuse disposal sites located throughout the county, including a site at the landfill itself for disposal after hours or on holidays.  By county ordinance, ONLY normal household waste can be disposed of at these sites; it is illegal to discard furniture, bedsprings, household appliances, construction or demolition waste, concrete, rocks, sand, gravel, tree limbs, stumps, brush, farm waste over 100 pounds, fence posts, wire, tires, automotive batteries or battery acids, motor oils, solvents, bulk liquids in excess of five gallons, animal carcasses, human or animal excrement, or any hazardous material other than normal household cleaners.  These items must be taken to the landfill during operating hours for proper disposal.  There are also facilities at the landfill for free disposal of used motor oil and antifreeze.  The full text of the ordinance is available through the link in the upper left column of this page.

In addition to the one at the landfill, these public dump sites are located at Eastport, Good Grief, County Road 45 in Copeland, Porthill, at the Deep Creek Boat Ramp on County Road 18, on County Road 42 (Turner Hill), County Road 73 (Deer Creek), County Road 24C in District 15, County Road 23 in Paradise Valley, on Old Highway 2 at Naples and at Deep Creek.  Waste disposed at these sites is collected on a regular schedule by landfill personnel.

Holidays observed by the solid waste department are New Years Day, Washington's Birthday, Independence Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day and Christmas Day.  These holidays delay normal collection schedules by one day.

The only items for which there are fees for disposal are large animal carcasses, $10, demolition and construction debris, $5 per cubic yard, and heavy demolition debris, $15 per cubic yard.
