Child Protective Act workshop set for local law enforcement

April 19, 2004

The Boundary County Prosecuting Attorney’s office will host a free law enforcement training seminar on Child Protective Act Issues from 8:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday, May 19, at the Bonners Ferry Fire Hall in downtown Bonners Ferry, and law enforcement personnel from the five North Idaho counties are encouraged to attend.

Presenters will include Bonner County Prosecutor Phil Douglas, Sandpoint pediatrician Dr. Joyce Gilbert and Kootenai Tribal Judge Fred Gabourie.

Robinson will speak on issues of the Child Protective Act that pertain to law enforcement.

“I chose Phil Robinson because he is one of the most knowledgeable attorneys in the state on the Child Protective Act,” Boundary County Prosecutor Jack Douglas said. “He has been a prosecutor for many years and has a lot of solid, practical experience. Many attorneys turn to Phil for advice on these issues, so I believe his experience will benefit law enforcement.”

Robinson and Dr. Gilbert will speak on “Shaken Baby Syndrome,” and Judge Gabourie will address issues law enforcement faces involving Native American children and the Indian Child Welfare Act.

This seminar is not open to the general public, but Douglas said he is exploring the possibility of hosting workshops that are.

“Although this conference will not be open to the public, we are willing to consider putting on others that would be,” he said. “Community involvement and education are important to our office. We will be looking in the future to hosting such an event.”
