Crapo, Wasden to assist with drug prevention in community

March 24, 2004

Idaho Senator Mike Crapo will be in Bonners Ferry as the guest speaker for Prevention Night April 14, and Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden is working on plans to visit in late summer or early fall to help further the cause of the Boundary County Substance Abuse Task Force.

Boundary County Prosecuting Attorney Jack Douglas invited both officials to be part of the anti-drug effort in Boundary County, and he said both were enthusiastic about the offer. Both attended the Lincoln Day Dinner held here March 20, and Douglas said both were looking forward to lending their support.

Douglas first contacted Crapo’s office several weeks ago, and he said the Senator has been enthusiastic from the outset.

“I am pleased with the cooperation we’ve received from Senator Crapo and his staff,” Douglas said. “He doesn’t have an opponent in his re-election campaign this year, so it can be fairly said he is doing this to show he cares what happens here. He comes a long way to get here, and we appreciate it. When this community needs him, Senator Crapo always finds a way to come through.”

Wasden was invited to last year’s Prevention Night, but prior commitments kept him from being able to accept, and while he can’t make this year’s event for the same reason, he and his staff are working with Douglas and the Substance Abuse Coalition to arrange his appearance later in the season, possibly around the time of the All-Class Reunion and the County Fair.

Prevention Night, made possible in large part by the work of the Substance Abuse Coalition, begins with a spaghetti feed put on by the local chapter of Idaho Drug Free Youth at 5 p.m. April 14 at the Bonners Ferry High School, and Senator Crapo is scheduled to speak on “Drugs and Youth” at 6 p.m. The evening showcases the services and resources available in the community to help prevent substance abuse and to help those who’ve fallen victim.

“Many good people work as part of the Substance Abuse Coalition, and they are the real heroes,” Douglas said. “They do the unheralded work behind the scenes throughout the year because they truly care about the future of the community. They share a vision that there is more we can do to battle drugs and substance abuse and save families.”

Everyone is invited to Prevention Night. Cost of the spaghetti dinner is $3 per person or $15 for the entire family. To find out more, call D.A.R.E. officer Joel Minor, (208) 267-4395, or Bunny Hodgson, (208) 267-7334.
