Senator Crapo to speak at Prevention Night

March 16, 2004

Idaho Senator Mike Crapo will be on hand for Prevention Night April 14 at Bonners Ferry High School, an evening when everyone can learn what resources there are in our community being used in the fight against drug and substance abuse.

“Senator Crapo’s staff has been very courteous and they continue to show an interest in events in our community,” said Boundary County Prosecutor Jack Douglas, who is helping organize the event. Crapo will speak on Drugs and Youth at 6 p.m., and he’ll answer questions on what’s being done at the highest levels of government in waging the war on drugs.

Douglas said the community has long shown a willingness to work for a safer community, and he anticipates a strong turnout at the Wednesday evening event.

“When Judge James Michaud held a meeting at the courthouse a couple of years ago to talk about drug court, attendance was standing room only in the large courtroom,” he said. “We had a much bigger turnout than a similar meeting held in Sandpoint. What it showed is that people here want to support new ideas and programs to help make our community safer.”

The evening begins at 5 p.m. with a spaghetti feed fundraiser. Cost is $3 per person or $15 for the family. There will be displays and information booths by most county groups and agencies involved in battling substance abuse, including the Idaho Drug Free Youth, Citizens Against Tobacco, Peers Educating Abstinent Kids, D.A.R.E., Natural Helpers, Juvenile Probation, the Idaho National Guard and Powder Basin.

There will be prize drawings throughout the evening and refreshments will be available, and everyone in the community is encouraged to attend.
