Boundary County’s Second Chance Animal Adoption and local runners Jack Douglas and Jim Cadnum are inviting walkers, runners and their dogs to take part in the “Canine Caper” 5K dog walk/run at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 17, at the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge.
The goal is to honor the bond between pets and their guardians, as well as to raise money for Second Chance Animal Adoption, a non-profit organization operated entirely by volunteers dedicated to improving the lives of pets in Boundary County. The goal is to raise $500 to $1,000, Douglas said.
The cost to enter is $7 if you bring a dog and $5 if you don’t. Entry forms are available at The Badger Den and the Bonners Ferry Veterinarian Clinic.
The course starts at the refuge headquarters and goes 1 ½ miles down the west side road and back, offering a soft-surface and spectacular scenery and vistas.
If you can’t bring your own dog, you’re encouraged to bring a friend’s, if no dog is available, there’ll be a number of adoptable dogs on hand to keep you company. If you’d rather not have the company, not to worry; you’re welcome, too!
“This event will be a good tune-up for Bloomsday, which is just two weeks later,” Douglas said. “I hope people will come, even if all they want is a beautiful morning walk. If you don’t have a dog, feel free to come out and walk or run the event as a tune-up for Bloomsday and the upcoming Kootenai River Run, which will be held June 12. This is a run that you will enjoy, and a cause you can feel good about.”
All proceeds from the event go to Second Chance, to be used for caring for stray and injured pets.
In addition to walkers and runners, volunteers are also needed to man aid stations, help clean up the course and other tasks.
