After noting the deterioration of the sidewalk leading to the front doors of the Boundary County Courthouse and expressing concern for public safety, Commissioners called for a quick fix to last until permanent repairs could be made.
Before placing a temporary patch, however, maintenance supervisor Gerald Kothe called masonry contractor Les Richardson for advice and the county got more than it expected.
After looking at the uneven surface and the wide joints in the sidewalk, Richardson volunteered to fix it right the first time at no cost to the county. Working after hours, Richardson cleaned out and filled the joints and leveled the slabs, not only on the entry walk that caused so much concern, but on the sidewalk in front of the courthouse as well.
While it’s unknown exactly how much he saved the taxpayers of the county as he refused to give an estimate on the repairs, Boundary County Commissioners expressed their thanks with a letter of appreciation July 1 both for his contribution and for making the approaches to the county courthouse safer.
