As the snow falls softly from the overcast sky I grumble, for it keeps pilots, like myself, on the ground. The decreased visibility and the possibility of structural icing are large concerns for pilots this time of year. However, North Idaho winter weather can change rapidly from one system to the next. Although winter flying can be enjoyable on clear, clam days because airplanes perform well in the cold, dense air, snowy, stormy weather can make flying difficult. Today the snow is drifting, and my mind is also drifting to thoughts of flying.

As I reflect on the past year, I think of the numerous students who have passed through the airport and airplane doors, reliving countless landings with each student trying to make every landing perfect, even though most veteran pilots fall short of perfect. I think of the students who came to me with a goal and left here achieving a dream. Their persistence and dedication is not only seen in flying, but in all aspects of their lives.

This past year has been an exciting one at the airport. Growth and improvements can be seen in all directions, from a parallel taxiway to numerous new hangars. Our local Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter continues to grow and host events from Young Eagle flights to Wings and Wheels.

Between the spring and fall ground school classes, more than 20 students expanded their aviation knowledge. From aircraft systems to airspace to weather, my students tell me they never knew so much was involved with becoming a pilot. They have a newfound respect for those who pursue their aviation dreams and goals.

Our new student pilots--David Solum, Tim Silva, Andrew Esselbach, Jeff Sample, Ron Denowh, Jasper Jessop, Justin Johnson, Craig Johnson, and Craig Wheatley--have had the exhilarating experience of solo flight this year.

Congratulations to our 2004 private pilots, Jason Garten, Tony Azuyak, Wade Winkelseth, and Chris Ralph, and to our Instrument Rated pilots, Delbert McDaniel and Rebecca Hawkins. Ron Denowh, Ivan Dunnick, Jacob Bushnell, Gary Lambert, and Jennifer Dougherty are all close to completing their private pilot training, while Stefanie Yamashita is nearly finished with her Instrument Rating.

I am looking forward to 2005 in hopes of those clear, crisp, calm days. I am excited to share the gift of flight with all who pass through the airport doors. Congratulations again to all our new pilots; may you spread your wings as we welcome the new year. Happy Holidays!
