The unusually nice weather the past couple
of months has been a blessing for those of us in aviation. It has allowed
for many beautiful flying days. The airport has been abuzz the past few
weeks with students preparing for their final checkrides. The students
could be seen studying and flying day after day. Their determination and
hard work paid off, for all of the students passed their checkrides with
flying colors.
Five students recently earned their private pilot licenses: Jacob Bushnell,
Jasper Jessop, Justin Johnson, Ron Denowh, and Chris Ralph. Jacob was
inspired to fly by his late grandfather, who was also a pilot. Jacob
earned his wings in January and is looking forward to sharing the gift
of flight with his family. Jacob said, "It feels good to set a
goal and accomplish it." In the future, Jacob may pursue his Instrument
Rating, which would allow him to fly from airport to airport through
the clouds solely by reference to the instruments in the aircraft.
Jasper
Jessop and Justin Johnson were inseparable throughout their flight training.
The two friends would study together and take turns riding in the back
seat while the other one was flying. By riding in the back seat during
instructional flights, these students were able to learn from each other.
This learning process accelerated their flight training. Justin's uncle
recently purchased a Cessna 172, which Jasper and Justin will soon be
flying regularly for pleasure and for transportation. Jasper said that
learning to fly was "something I always wanted to do." Jasper
and Justin both want to pursue their Instrument Ratings, and Justin
also wants to become an Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic.
Ron Denowh successfully
passed his checkride on a blustery day. Ron accomplished a life-long
goal of earning his license and looks forward to no longer driving,
but flying his commute between Libby, MT and Spokane, WA. Ron has had
his heart in aviation for many years, for he has also been a powered
parachute instructor for 13 years. He hopes to purchase his own aircraft
soon. His advice to those seeking their license is to "commit the
time." The more frequent you fly, the less time and money it will
take to earn your license.
Chris
Ralph, also from Libby, earned his wings this winter. Chris Ralph works
for Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks. Chris plans to use his license
for pleasure to fly around the beautiful area we are blessed with. He
said, "The biggest challenge about learning to fly was solo cross-countries
and mastering the landings." Although becoming a pilot is a lot
of work, time, and effort, Chris is glad he did it. Now he has a lifetime
ahead full of flying adventures in which he can share the joy and freedom
of flight with his wife and children.
The spring ground school class is well underway with seven enthusiastic
students; many of which have already been flying. The spring is a beautiful
time of the year to view the majestic area we live in from the air.
Please call Northern Air at 208-267-4359 if you are interested in a
scenic flight.
